TOEIC Pt5: Missing word or phrase

From Pt 5 onward the recipe changes: you have finished the listening portion and you are about to embark upon the reading  –> understanding –> responding portion of the test.  For example:

In this section it is a matter of missing words and phrases

"Your course manager will determine your ……………….. which will be available to you before the first week of term".

A. Capability

B. Intentions.

C. Timetable

D. Graduation

Obviously the correct answer is: C!

This is more sophisticated than it looks: you have to be able to understand the sentence and the word/phrase options AND what will and will not 'work' in certain cases.

This is simply a case of immersing yourself in English, building up a vocabularly and being confident in how to use it.  This will occur throughout your:

• assignments (and feedback from me)
• class participation (and feedback from me)
• work outside class, immersing yourself in the English language (CLAM / NovaTris/ English Club / news in English etc etc.
• testing yourself on Englishteststore.net and the other associated sites you have been shown where missing word/phrase tests are available to you. BUT… these tests can only show you how you are performing and give you practice – they don't actually advance your learning UNLESS you deliberately try to understand and correct for the future every mistake you make.  That is why I try to get you talking and writing in class – so I can help you improve.
