Intro to Intro to Business!

SYWB6265

René and Claude in the photo definitely know what they are doing: they are two of our 40 – strong team of Repair Café experts busy repairing (for free) anything that you might have that is broken and you can carry.  CoVid-willing, we will try to bring the Repair Café to the Campus this academic year.  In any case, the Repair Cafe meets every FIRST SATURDAY of the month from 09.00 – 12.00 in Brunstatt (in the great hall of the Les Tilleuls opposite the Avenue 294 Restaurant and the Pharmacie on Rue d’Altkirch – Brunstatt’s main street).  Ellen and I do the Accueil  – so we look forward to seeing you there!).

Watch out for the publicity – and please spread the word!!!

.

Task 1:

What (on earth) am I doing here?

In teams of four or five, ‘brainstorm’ up your ‘Top Five’ responses to each of the following:

Why did you choose to do this particular option?

What sort of careers do you feel you could see yourself having in Business (in what business sectors or functions)?

What would you like this option to assist you with in terms of:

  • knowledge
  • skills

NB.  Your brainstorm discussions must be in English.

Then, be prepared to briefly present your findings to the rest of the class.

Task 2.  Finding Online Introduction to Business Resources (in English)

In pairs, logon to a PC (or one each if we don’t have too many students)  and work together online to identify appropriate resources which may help you in this unit.

  • identify 10 such resources
  • refine them to produce a ‘top five‘ and save the links to share with your colleagues so that we can have an extensive resources list
  • write a review [in English, of course] of your best resource, justifying your choice.  [NB. How do we know that the resource is valid, reliable and unbiased?  – Anyone can put up a website….are you sure you can trust it?  What sort of people, organisations and establishments would YOU trust?]

Then, be prepared to present your findings to the rest of the class.   We may manage to complete this in our first week together or, if not, I may ask you to continue the work during the week and present it in the next week.

FINAL QUESTION and an important NB.

1. After this introduction, meeting me and learning what we are going to be doing in this unit are there any people in the room who have decided they will NOT be following this unit in future?  I won’t be upset, I promise!  You need to be doing a unit that interests you!  I am just trying to guage how many of you are likely to be in class on a week to week basis so I can estimate team / group sizes.

2.  NB. Please BE SURE that you ARE ABLE to sign up to the Intro to Business Unit: this will have been explained to you at L3 induction by Mme Dick.   [You do NOT all HAVE TO DO this unit – it IS AN OPTION from among others from which you must select ONE: read the L3 handbook closely on this or double-check with Mme Dick.]

Please sign in on the list I am circulating if you are sure you want to sign up to the unit…. and remember to specify this choice on the form that Scolarité requires of you.

So – I look forward to seeing you – well those I haven’t already put off the unit – next week.

If you are not quite sure yet, I do understand, but please don’t leave your decision too long – we are limited to the number of seats and PCs in 308 and next week the first Block commences and teams will be being established….

I’m very much looking forward to this year in your company …… I hope you are looking forward to mine!
