Music as ‘power’

Q. Just where does that ‘power’ to move us, make us feel and make us act actually come from?  [Even if you switch off the picture and turn up the sound it still works…. and with volume the power seems to increase too.  … and after you switch it off iot still imposes itself upon your memory and haunts you.     OK, this song might not ‘do it’ for all of us, but you will all have experience of music that can have this effect upon you.  I even wrote about the first time I heard Jackson Browne’s music and how it had such a lasting effect upon me:

David Bowie and Annie Lennox’s Tribute to Freddie Mercury: Under Pressure’ .… look at the impact upon 120,000 people of what happens at 30 seconds into the song when John Deacon, the Bassist, plays just seven notes one one string (and six of these notes are the same – yet it is absolutely hypnotic).  Instantly people ‘connect’ and are galvanised into action almost despite themselves.

OR

Freddie Mercury’s own opening to the same song…… and the power he can exert upon his audience.  Under Pressure.  This time the famous bassline comes a full two minutes 20 seconds into the song!
