Sustainable Tourism
Only just finished speaking about definitions of Tourism…. and already here is another prefix: sustainability… ‘sustainable tourism’.
Don’t think for a moment about definitions you may well have heard / read….
- What do YOU think the term sustainable / sustainability means?
- What does it mean to YOU in your daily life or when you come to choose a holiday?
- What might it mean at a practical level to an airline, a tour-operator, a destination like Torremolinos, Alsace Tourism, a small gîte in the Sundgau or to the Minister of state with Tourism responsibility?
- What does it mean to ‘Joe Shmo’ / ‘Mr Average‘ when his/her thoughts turn towards holidays……
Well, all these things we will be considering, along with others like:
- the emergence of the modern sustainability movement: why did it come out of the 1980s……?
- terminology or ‘terminological inexactitude’ …. what to make of terms like the following – do they all mean the same thing:
- green tourism
- soft tourism
- responsible tourism
- eco tourism
- alternative tourism
- sustainable tourism
- the theory and practice and practicalities of implementing sustainable strategies
- certification schemes: their value and perception
- sustainable futures and predictions
