Spilling out and spiralling out of control.

Which might have suggested

She was just thinking of maybe heading out-of-state

To find a legally-operating abortion clinic.

Others using risky, old-wives-tale

Recipes and ‘remedies’

As dangerous DIY solutions

With no medical support service in place

To address the inevitable, ensuing problems.

America had another

Puritanical ‘Prohibition’

In the 1920s and early 30s

To ban alcohol consumption.

What happened?

It drove the drinking culture underground

And straight into the welcoming arms

Of the mafia and the criminal underworld.

This profiteering got so bad

That Prohibition was eventually prohibited

And a form of bar-licensing was adopted.

Let’s get logical about it:

The demand for abortion will remain.

The supply of official clinics will reduce.

Inevitable results:

Increased prices piling financial pain

Upon the physical and psychological.

       .

The lure of a quick buck

Will draw the unscrupulous and unqualified

Into an unregulated ‘backstreet market’.

Until the horror stories mount

Inevitably and uncontrollably

And something has to be done by someone:

Reinstate Roe, perhaps…?

But how much unnecessary suffering

To how many young women

Will have been caused before then….?
